What Is a Beard Transplant?
A beard transplant is an FUE hair transplant applied to the face. Follicular units are taken one at a time from the donor area at the back and sides of your scalp, where hair is permanent, and placed into the cheeks, jawline, moustache or chin. Once healed they grow as beard hair: you shave it, trim it and style it like the rest.
The same procedure is sometimes described as beard implants, beard hair grafting or beard restoration surgery. The names differ, the surgery is the same.
Most beard transplants are thickening work rather than building a beard from nothing. Patchy cheeks, a gap between the moustache and the chin, thin sideburns or an uneven jawline are the typical cases. How a Beard Transplant Works
The procedure is carried out in a single day under local anaesthetic. You are awake throughout, and most patients find the numbing injections the only uncomfortable part.
Grafts are extracted individually from the donor area of the scalp. Hair from this area is a close match for beard hair and it keeps its permanence after it is moved. Each graft is then placed one at a time, at the flat angle beard hair naturally grows, following the design agreed before surgery. Single-hair grafts are used along the outlines, where the eye is most sensitive, so the edges look grown rather than drawn.

Designing Your Beard
The design is where a beard transplant is won or lost, because unlike scalp work every line is on show. Before surgery the surgeon draws the design on your face and agrees it with you: the cheek line, the jawline and neckline, how the moustache joins the chin, and how the new growth blends into any beard you already have.

Beard Transplant Recovery, Week by Week
Recovery is quicker than most patients expect, and it follows a predictable pattern.
For the first few days the transplanted area shows a small scab at each graft, with some redness and mild swelling. The photograph below was taken the day after surgery, and it is an honest picture of what to expect: fine dotted scabbing across the treated area rather than anything dramatic.
The scabs lift and clear over the first two weeks. By the end of week two the area typically shows only slight redness, as the second photograph shows, and that fades over the following weeks.
Do not shave the transplanted area for the first two weeks. After that it can be trimmed, and normal shaving can usually resume from around a month, once the grafts are secure.
Between roughly week two and week eight the transplanted hairs shed. This is normal and expected, and it is not the grafts failing: the follicle stays in place and new growth begins at around three months. The beard fills in from there and reaches its final density between nine and twelve months.

How Many Grafts Does a Beard Transplant Take?
It depends on the areas being treated and the growth you are starting from. The typical ranges below match both the published surgical literature (see Beard Hair Transplantation and Beard Transplantation and Beard-to-Scalp Hair Restoration on PubMed) and what we see in practice.

A beard also reads as full at a lower graft density than scalp work. Beard hair is coarser and usually darker than scalp hair, so transplanted beards are typically placed at around 25 to 40 grafts per square centimetre depending on the area, against the 40 per square centimetre a scalp hairline needs. The ceiling is the same as any transplant: 3,500 grafts is the most that can safely be placed in one day, and for very curly or afro-textured hair the realistic maximum is closer to 2,000 to 2,500.
