How Many Grafts Do I Need for a Norwood 1 Transplant?
Most people at Norwood 1 need no grafts at all, because Norwood 1 means there is no hair loss yet: the hairline is still in its original position. A transplant at this stage is usually about refining the hairline rather than restoring lost hair, and takes up to about 1,000 grafts. Rebuilding the temple points takes 500 to 1,000 grafts, and lowering a naturally high hairline takes about 1,000 grafts for each centimetre. The surgeon confirms whether you need anything at your consultation.
Estimate your graft numbers in 3D
Our Interactive 3D hair transplant graft calculator lets you move a front hairline slider and a crown slider until a 3D head matches your own hair, then shows an estimated number of grafts and the price. The estimate moves in steps of 500 grafts, and the surgeon confirms the real figure when they assess your scalp.

Estimated grafts at Norwood 1
-
No hair loss to treat: no grafts
-
Rebuilding the temple points: 500 to 1,000 grafts
-
Lowering a naturally high hairline: about 1,000 grafts for each centimetre
Key Facts:
-
Norwood 1 is not hair loss. It is the first stage of the Norwood scale: a full head of hair with the hairline where it started.
-
Most people need no grafts. A transplant at Norwood 1 refines the hairline rather than restoring lost hair, and is up to about 1,000 grafts.
-
About 1,000 grafts per centimetre. Lowering a hairline takes about 1,000 grafts for each centimetre it moves forward.
-
One procedure. Anything done at Norwood 1 fits easily within one procedure.
-
Hair loss may come later. If it does, the design leaves room for it, so the new hairline still suits you in the future.
What Norwood 1 looks like
Norwood 1 is the starting point of the Norwood scale: a full head of hair with no recession at the temples and no thinning at the crown, typical of the teenage years and early adulthood. Most men's hairlines later lift a centimetre or so into a mature hairline, which is Norwood 2, and many stay there for life.

Norwood 1: no hair loss

About 500 grafts: temple points

About 1,000 grafts: hairline forward about 1cm
How many grafts for Norwood 1 work
These are typical figures. Your own number depends on the width of your hairline, the density needed and the thickness of your hair.
What is being done | Grafts usually needed |
|---|---|
Nothing to treat | None |
Rebuilding the temple points | 500 to 1,000 (about 250 to 500 each side) |
Lowering the hairline by about 1cm | About 1,000 |
Prices for each size of procedure are on our 500 grafts and 1,000 grafts pages, and what is included is on our Norwood 1 transplant cost page.
Is 500 or 1,000 grafts enough at Norwood 1?
Is Norwood 1 balding?
No. Norwood 1 is the stage before any hair loss: the hairline is in its original position and the crown is full. Hair loss starts to show at Norwood 2 and is usually regarded as clinically significant from Norwood 3.
Is 500 grafts enough at Norwood 1?
For the temple points, often yes. 500 grafts rebuilds both temple points, about 250 a side, which is the most common small job at this stage.
Is 1,000 grafts enough at Norwood 1?
For almost any Norwood 1 work, yes. 1,000 grafts lowers the whole hairline by about 1cm, or rebuilds both temple points with some to spare.
Do you need a transplant at Norwood 1?
Usually not. Norwood 1 has no hair loss to restore, so a transplant at this stage is a cosmetic choice: a naturally high forehead, or temple points you would like stronger. If your hairline has started to move, it is worth knowing whether it is maturing or receding before doing anything, because a maturing hairline stops on its own. Our mature vs receding hairline guide shows how to tell them apart.
Surgeons are also cautious with younger people, because hair loss that has not started yet can still come. A hairline built low and dense at twenty can look out of place if the hair behind it thins later, so the design leaves room for the future.
Afro-textured and very curly hair
Very curly and Afro-textured hair covers more scalp per graft, so a hairline can often look full with fewer grafts, and Afro hairlines are usually designed flatter and straighter across the front. Our 3D calculator is based on straight hair, so for Afro hair the surgeon assesses the number directly. Our Afro hair transplant page explains more.

Frequently asked questions
Q: How many grafts do I need for a Norwood 1 transplant?
A: Usually none, because Norwood 1 means no hair loss. Where a transplant is wanted, it is up to about 1,000 grafts: 500 to 1,000 to rebuild the temple points, or about 1,000 for each centimetre a naturally high hairline is lowered.
Q: Can you get a hair transplant at Norwood 1?
A: Yes, but it is a cosmetic choice rather than a repair. The usual reasons are a naturally high forehead or weak temple points, and the surgeon will tell you honestly at consultation whether it is worth doing.
Q: How many grafts to lower a hairline by 2cm?
A: About 2,000. A hairline is roughly 25cm wide and is planted at about 40 grafts per square centimetre, so each centimetre it moves forward takes about 1,000 grafts.
Q: Is Norwood 1 the same as a mature hairline?
A: No. Norwood 1 is the original, teenage hairline. A mature hairline sits a centimetre or so higher, especially at the temples, and is Norwood 2. Most men move from one to the other in their late teens or twenties, and it is not hair loss.
Q: Will I need more grafts later?
A: Possibly. If hair loss starts in future, the hair behind a new hairline can thin, and you may choose a further procedure. That is why a Norwood 1 hairline is designed to suit you as you get older, not just today.
