How Many Grafts Do I Need for a Norwood 5 Transplant?

A Norwood 5 transplant typically needs 4,000 to 5,000 grafts to restore the hairline, the front of the scalp and the crown, planned over two procedures. The front is usually restored first, with up to 3,500 grafts, and the crown at least six months later. Extensive cases close to Norwood 6 can need more, and how much can be restored depends on your donor area. The surgeon confirms your number at consultation.

Estimate your graft numbers in 3D

Our Interactive 3D hair transplant graft calculator lets you move a front hairline slider and a crown slider until a 3D head matches your own hair, then shows an estimated number of grafts and the price. The estimate moves in steps of 500 grafts, and the surgeon confirms the real figure when they assess your scalp.

Estimated grafts at Norwood 5

  • The front and crown, with the band between them narrowing: about 4,000 grafts

  • A typical Norwood 5: about 4,500 grafts

  • Extensive Norwood 5, with the band almost gone: about 5,000 grafts

Key Facts:

  • Advanced hair loss. At Norwood 5 the front and crown areas enlarge and the band of hair between them narrows.

  • Usually 4,000 to 5,000 grafts. Most of them go to the front, which frames the face.

  • Always two procedures. Up to 3,500 grafts can be placed in one procedure, so Norwood 5 is planned as two, at least six months apart.

  • Grafts are not hairs. Each graft holds one to four hairs, averaging about 2.2, so 5,000 grafts is roughly 11,000 hairs.

  • Your donor area sets the limit. A typical donor area can give about 6,000 to 7,000 grafts across a lifetime, so Norwood 5 uses most of it.

What Norwood 5 looks like

Norwood 5 is the fifth stage of the Norwood scale. The bald areas at the front and the crown have grown larger, and the band of hair that still separates them has become narrower and thinner. The two areas are starting to merge, which marks advanced male pattern hair loss.

How many grafts for Norwood 5 work

These are typical figures. Your own number depends on the size of the front and crown areas, the density needed, how much donor hair you have, and your hair: curly or wavy hair covers more scalp per graft than fine, straight hair.

What is being done
Grafts usually needed
The front and crown, with the band between them narrowing
About 4,000, over two procedures
A typical Norwood 5
About 4,500, over two procedures
Extensive Norwood 5, with the band almost gone
About 5,000, over two procedures

Is 4,000 or 5,000 grafts enough at Norwood 5?

Is Norwood 5 too late for a hair transplant?

No, as long as your donor area can supply enough grafts. Norwood 5 is advanced hair loss, so the front is given priority and the result is planned around the donor hair available. The surgeon checks your donor density at consultation and tells you honestly what can be restored.

Is 4,000 grafts enough at Norwood 5?

For an early Norwood 5, often yes. 4,000 grafts restores the front of the scalp and the crown where the band of hair between them is still fairly wide, over two procedures.

Is 5,000 grafts enough at Norwood 5?

For almost any Norwood 5, yes. 5,000 grafts restores the front, the crown and the narrowing band between them, over two procedures, and is the upper end of what this stage needs.

Our Results Speak For Themselves¹

Planning two procedures at Norwood 5

Because up to 3,500 grafts can be placed in one procedure, Norwood 5 is always planned as two. The first procedure usually restores the hairline and the front of the scalp, because the front frames the face. The second, at least six months later, completes the crown and adds density where it is needed, planned around how the first has grown and how much donor hair is left. A typical donor area can give about 6,000 to 7,000 grafts across a lifetime, so at this stage the plan keeps some in reserve in case hair loss continues. Our guide to how many grafts a full head needs explains how the two procedures are split.

Some people at this stage have the Type A pattern (Norwood 5A), in which the hairline recedes from front to back as one front, without a separate crown. It is planned as one large area across the front and top of the scalp, still over two procedures.

Afro-textured and very curly hair

Very curly and Afro-textured hair covers more scalp per graft, so the front and crown can often look full with fewer grafts. The hair curves beneath the skin and takes longer to extract, so the most that can be placed in one procedure is usually about 2,000 to 2,500, and Norwood 5 may need more than two procedures. Our 3D calculator is based on straight hair, so for Afro hair the surgeon assesses the number directly. Our Afro hair transplant page explains more.

Frequently asked questions

Q: How many grafts do I need for a Norwood 5 transplant?

A: Usually 4,000 to 5,000, over two procedures: about 4,000 where the band of hair between the front and crown is still fairly wide, about 4,500 for a typical Norwood 5, and about 5,000 where the band has almost gone.s.

Q: Can Norwood 5 be done in one procedure?

A: No. Up to 3,500 grafts can be placed in one procedure, so Norwood 5 is planned as two procedures at least six months apart, usually the front first and the crown second.

Q: How long is there between the two procedures?

A: At least six months. That gives the donor area time to recover and lets the second procedure be planned around how the first has grown.

Q: Is 6,000 hair grafts a lot?

A: Yes. 6,000 grafts is close to what a typical donor area can give across a lifetime, about 6,000 to 7,000, and more than Norwood 5 usually needs. It is the range for Norwood 6, always over two procedures.s about 6,600 hairs.

Q: How many hairs is 5,000 grafts?

A: Roughly 11,000. Each graft holds one to four hairs, averaging about 2.2, so 4,000 grafts is about 8,800 hairs.
