Hair loss can be distressing for both men and women, and it usually has more than one cause. Genetics, hormones, stress, thyroid problems and nutrition can all play a part. One factor that comes up again and again is vitamin D, and searches linking vitamin D and hair loss are extremely common. This guide takes an honest look at what the evidence does and does not show, how a deficiency is diagnosed in the UK, and what correcting it can realistically achieve. Can low vitamin D cause hair loss?
The honest answer is that low vitamin D is associated with several types of hair loss, but association is not the same as proof that it caused the loss. Research has repeatedly found that people with telogen effluvium (sudden, diffuse shedding), alopecia areata (patchy hair loss driven by the immune system) and, in some studies, female pattern hair loss tend to have lower vitamin D levels than people without hair loss. That pattern is fairly consistent. What these studies cannot tell us is the direction of the link: a lack of vitamin D might contribute to shedding, or the two might simply occur together. So while low vitamin D can be one contributing factor, it is rarely the whole story.
Why vitamin D matters to hair follicles
Vitamin D is unusual in that it behaves more like a hormone than a typical vitamin. Hair follicles carry the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in their keratinocytes and dermal papilla cells, and this receptor helps regulate the hair growth cycle. The strongest evidence for its importance comes from genetics: people and laboratory models with a faulty or missing vitamin D receptor develop hair loss, which is why a deficiency is considered biologically plausible as a contributor. It is worth noting, though, that the amount of vitamin D circulating in your blood and the activity of the receptor inside the follicle are not the same thing. That is one reason simply taking more vitamin D does not reliably grow hair.
Can vitamin D help hair growth?
Vitamin D helps move hair follicles out of the resting (telogen) phase and into the active growth (anagen) phase, so in theory a healthy level supports normal cycling. In practice, the benefit depends entirely on whether you are deficient. Correcting a genuine deficiency is worthwhile for your general health and may help shedding settle if low vitamin D was one of the contributors. Taking extra vitamin D when your levels are already normal does not grow hair, and taking too much can be harmful. Vitamin D is not a hair loss treatment in its own right.
How is a vitamin D deficiency diagnosed?
Deficiency is confirmed with a simple blood test that measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D, often written as 25(OH)D. This is the standard marker of your vitamin D status. In the UK, a level below 25 nmol/L is generally taken to indicate deficiency, with higher levels regarded as adequate for most people. Only a blood test can confirm whether you are deficient, so if you are concerned it is best to ask your GP rather than assume.
Signs of a vitamin D deficiency
Hair thinning is sometimes linked to low vitamin D, but on its own it is a weak clue because so many things cause thinning. A deficiency is more strongly suggested when other signs appear alongside it, such as:
- bone pain or tenderness
- muscle aches, weakness or cramps
- tiredness and low energy
- low mood
- getting infections more often
Many of these are non-specific and overlap with other conditions, which is exactly why a blood test, rather than a symptom checklist, is the reliable way to know.
What causes a vitamin D deficiency?
Common reasons include:
- limited sunlight, especially in the UK between October and early March when the sun is too weak for the skin to make vitamin D
- spending most of the time indoors, or keeping the skin covered outdoors
- having darker skin, which makes less vitamin D from the same amount of sunlight
- a diet low in vitamin D, as few foods contain much of it
- older age, as the skin becomes less efficient at producing it
- some digestive conditions, such as Crohn's disease or coeliac disease, that reduce absorption
Correcting a vitamin D deficiency safely
In the UK, the NHS advises that everyone should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms (400 IU) of vitamin D during the autumn and winter, when sunlight is too weak to rely on. People who get little sunlight, who are housebound, who keep their skin covered, or who have darker skin are advised to take it all year round. Most adults do not need more than this. The safe upper limit for adults is 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) a day, and taking more than that over a long period can cause too much calcium to build up in the body (hypercalcaemia), which can weaken the bones and damage the kidneys and heart. If a blood test shows you are deficient, your GP may recommend a higher, short-term treatment dose, so dosing and testing decisions are best left to them.
Food and sunlight
Only a small number of foods contain much vitamin D. UK sources include oily fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, red meat, egg yolks, liver, and fortified foods such as some fat spreads and breakfast cereals. From late March to the end of September, most people in the UK can make enough vitamin D from sunlight on their skin. Sensible time outdoors helps, but never at the cost of burning, as sunburn raises the risk of skin cancer.
Topical vitamin D for hair loss
Topical vitamin D analogues, such as calcipotriol, are sometimes discussed for hair loss. The evidence is limited and comes mostly from small studies in alopecia areata, where calcipotriol has produced some regrowth in a proportion of patients, particularly those who started with lower vitamin D levels. It is not an established, mainstream treatment for hair loss, and it is not the same as taking vitamin D by mouth. Any use of a prescription topical should be guided by a doctor.
Can hair loss from a vitamin D deficiency be reversed?
If low vitamin D was a genuine contributor, for example alongside a bout of telogen effluvium, then correcting the deficiency may allow shedding to settle and hair to recover. Because the hair cycle is slow, any improvement usually takes several months rather than weeks, and it is not guaranteed. Where the underlying cause is genetic pattern hair loss (male or female pattern baldness), correcting vitamin D will not reverse it, although keeping your levels healthy is still sensible for your general wellbeing. There is no single timeline that applies to everyone, so it is best to treat vitamin D as one part of a wider assessment with your GP.
