What is the minimum age you need to be for a hair transplant?
Let's get straight into it - how old do you need to be for a hair transplant? legally you need to be at least 18 in the UK to give consent to have a hair transplant. However, there are several other factors we need to consider when approving you for surgery. Most responsible clinics will want to ensure that you are at a stage where the hair loss has stabilised, this means you are not still losing hair at a rapid rate, as we want to ensure we are not filling an area with hair that is going to quickly recede further beyond the point we have done the transplant up to, as we do not want to leave the patient with a result where a gap quickly forms between the transplanted hair and the original hair position.

e.g. if you have receded 3 centimetres from your original hairline position, we transplant hair to cover that area, a year later you have receded another 3cm and now have a rather unsightly gap between your newly transplanted hair and the existing hair.
In practice we will look to assess the rate of loss, and especially for those in their late teens or early twenties we may suggest waiting a little longer until the loss stabilises.

What is the maximum age you can be for a hair transplant?
In theory there is no maximum age for a transplant, but we do find that the percentage chances of success drop significantly the further you go past 70, this is due to the body's healing processes slowing down as you age, and as the grafts need to heal and reconnect to your blood supply in a certain time before they die, we find the higher your age the larger percentage of graft may fail. This can also depend on lifestyle factors like your health, if you drink or smoke, if you are diabetic and any other medical conditions may also influence the success rate.
If you are a very fit healthy individual in your early 70's with no other medical conditions then it may still be possible, and if you are prepared to accept the lower success rate, once in mid-late 70's or if you have other prevailing health conditions then we would likely advise against it.
